Motoazabu History

The Azabu area holds a rich and distinguished history. Once a quiet agricultural landscape, traces remain today in its many historic shrines and temples, including Zenpuku-ji near Azabu-Juban Station. Founded in 824, it is steeped in legend, most notably a ginkgo tree said to have grown from a monk’s planted walking stick, standing for over 700 years.

By the mid-Edo period, over 300 years ago, the establishment of government nearby transformed Azabu into a prestigious residential district, home to noble families and later to diplomats from around the world.

Today, this international legacy lives on in a vibrant, cosmopolitan community.

Along Motoazabu’s quiet streets, international schools and global dining sit comfortably alongside traditional shops and crafts, creating a rare balance of authenticity and urban sophistication in one of Tokyo’s most desirable neighbourhoods.
